Apple Surpassing Android With Businesses Writing Custom Mobile Apps

When it comes to supporting mobile devices, businesses tend to allow both iOS and Android devices.

The latest report from Good Technology shows a slight gain sequentially for iOS, which accounted for 72 percent of devices activated in the quarter, with Android-based hardware making up most of the rest of the devices connecting to its server software. On the tablet side, iOS continues to account for nine in 10 device activations.

But, perhaps more importantly, more than 95 percent of custom apps developed by businesses are written for Apple devices. The number of such apps rose more than 42 percent from the prior quarter, as businesses start to incorporate devices more heavily into their workflow.

“We see especially robust internal development activity focused on tablet applications and business transformation,” Good Technology CEO Christy Wyatt said in an email interview. “We are delighted to continue to see amazing growth with a 60 percent increase in device activations year over year, and with this growth comes increased investment in secure mobile app development within our global customers.”

Though iOS grew its share from a quarter ago, that was likely due to the arrival of the new iPhones, as Android has been gaining ground in recent quarters.

Fantastical 2 Debuts on iPhone With Reminders and Improved Event Parser

Flexibits today released Fantastical 2, a fully reworked version of the popular iOS calendar app.

The new app, which is a separate purchase for existing Fantastical owners, includes reminders support, an improved sentence parser -- perhaps the most unique and valuable feature in Fantastical -- background app refresh, and more.

Fantastical 2 now includes the ability to create and manage reminders directly from the event parser. Users can create reminders as well as calendar events using plain english. The parser allows users to type in full sentences like "Meeting with Eric Slivka at Ken & Sues on Tuesday at 7", or to use geofencing when creating reminders: "remind me to pick up the dry cleaning when I leave work".
"We wanted to make an iOS 7 iPhone calendar app worthy of the name Fantastical," said Michael Simmons, Co-Founder of Flexibits. "With its beautiful iOS 7 design and functionality, we’re confident users are going to love Fantastical 2 for iPhone."

With Fantastical 2 for iPhone, users will quickly and easily create, view, and search all of their events and reminders. The advanced natural language engine is extremely expressive, enabling users to enter event or reminder details in their own style. For example, users can enter sentences such as "Lunch with Elon at 123 Main Street on Tuesday" and Fantastical 2 for iPhone translates the sentence into an event and adds it to their calendar. And with support for reminders, users can enter sentences such as "todo Pick up dry cleaning" and the user will have a reminder, ready to check off.

Jim seems really happy.

It looks like Jimmy is the one who got the first two iPhone 5s, one for himself and one for his mother in Indonesia. What a nice guy! The Herald Sun has a nice article on Jimmy and his bit of fame.

Original Post:
Well, look at that! We’ve got our first glimpse of what may be the world’s first iPhone 5s, sold to a man named Jim in Sydney, Australia, where the coveted flagship Apple device has just gone on sale.

Apples Growth Trails Smartphone Market in 3Q 2013 but Improves in Broader Mobile Phone Market

Applelogo

Research firm IDC today released its estimates on worldwide mobile phone sales for the third quarter of 2013, once again showing Apples iPhone growth trailing that of the overall smartphone market.

Apples 33.8 million iPhone shipments were up 25.7% year-over-year, compared to 38.8% growth for the entire market. Market leader Samsung grew at slightly higher than the industry average, and Apple with its 13.1% share was able to hold onto the second-place ranking ahead of Huawei, Lenovo, and LG, all of which showed strong growth but remained at under 5% market share.

Worldwide Smartphone Shipments in 3Q13 in Millions of Units (Source: IDC)

Apples total volumes speak to the early success of the iPhones 5S and 5C, and the softening demand of older devices prior to the new models launching. The iPhone 5S lived up to the hype of the gold case and the fingerprint sensor, and the iPhone 5C with an array of colors. At the same time, limited usability on the fingerprint sensor and higher-than-expected pricing on the iPhone 5C drew mixed reactions. Still, this did not prevent Apple from enjoying a record 9 million units shipped in their debut. As in previous quarters, Apples performance in the overall mobile market benefited from the decline of the featurephone, with the companys 25.7% year-over-year growth easily topping the markets overall 5.7% growth and allowing Apple to remain firmly in third place behind Samsung and Nokia. According to IDC, smartphones accounted for 55% of total mobile phone shipments during the quarter, up from 42% in the third quarter of 2012.

Apple released its financial results for the third calendar quarter (fourth fiscal quarter) yesterday, revealing that the iPhone continues to account for majority of the companys revenue at 52 percent.

Apples Maps Team Hiring Web UI Designer for New Secret Project

maps

Apple today posted a new job listing seeking a Maps Web User Interface Designer to "design, develop, and maintain complex front-end code for a new secret project."

While the job listing briefly mentions Maps, it appears that the position could have a broader web development focus. According to the posting, the designer would join a small team that is working on an advanced web platform that will be the backbone of many future Apple services.

Qualifications for the position include a minimum of three years of experience building both applications and web services, along with understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, DOM, XML, JSON and various Javascript testing frameworks.

Design, develop, and maintain complex front-end code for a new secret project

Document and build unit tests for your code.

Work with operations, QA, and product management to maximize product effectiveness
Though it is unclear what the secret project alludes to, it is possible that Apple is working on building up a more prominent web presence, developing a series of web-based apps that would extend the Apple experience outside of Apple products.

For example, the company could build a web-based Maps app, similar to Google Maps, which could possibly be incorporated into iCloud or other Apple products in the future. At the present time, Apple still uses Google Maps for Find My iPhone in iCloud, and a new web-based Maps app could present a unified Apple mapping solution for the company.

It is also possible, however, that this position involves the building of internal web tools to manage Apple services that would not be public facing.

Apple has been working on expanding the reach of its products in recent months, introducing iBooks and Maps apps for the Mac with Mavericks and debuting iWork for iCloud, which allows Apples iWork apps to be accessed anywhere.

Tweetbot 3 Makes The Case For 3rd Party Twitter Apps With Bones Deep iOS 7 Rewrite

Today marks the launch of the full re-write of Tweetbot for iOS 7. The app is a paid upgrade, which is available for $2.99 at launch and will go up to $4.99 after the initial sale.

As one of the most popular third-party clients available for Twitter, the app has become the poster child for what outside developers brought to the Twitter equation. And with the iOS 7 update, it’s going to set another sort of precedent by showing what you can do with a truly bones-deep re-thinking of an app with Apple’s new aesthetic in mind.

When iOS 7 was released, we saw a lot of updates come down the pipe that were little more than a re-skinning of iOS 7 apps. A nip and tuck here and there for sure, but only a few were stripped down and re-done with Apple’s new indicators in mind. iOS 7 is all about physicality, and far less about the illustrative pixel-perfect character of iOS 6.

“We wanted to have a very clean and iOS 7 look to Tweetbot, with a strong focus on content. We used Physics and custom transitions to add that sense of joy that we add to our apps,” Tapbots’ Paul Haddad says of the Tweetbot 3 redesign.

That sense of joy permeates the app, with subtle animations and wonderfully redone audio cues. Everything is lighter, brighter and more readable overall. Within a couple of days of using the new app it was nearly impossible for me to look at the old version of Tweetbot for any extended period. It felt dark, static and very, very old. Part of this is the natural effect that iOS 7′s ‘shock to the system’ has had on all apps, but a lot more of it is a careful re-evaluation of what makes Tweetbot work.

Going from a very illustrative style to one that has to convey personality via subtle animations and clever uses of Apple’s new physics system is no small feat. Especially for an app as distinct as Tweetbot.

The main timeline of Tweetbot 3 has a brand new lighter look with a white background and crisp typography. The tweets obey Apple’s system-wide font sizing controls if you want to fit more on the page.

One major change that many will notice is that there is only a single directional swipe (right to left) to expand Twitter conversations now. Haddad says that this was to eliminate the confusion between the reply and conversation views. It takes some getting used to if you commonly used the replies view, but it’s less confusing over all.

Tweetbot 3 also features background tweet fetching using Apple’s new APIs. This means that you’ll see your newest tweets as soon as you open the app, a major improvement on the old ‘open and refresh’ behavior.

Tapping on a tweet still swings down the quick action pane and tapping-to-hold offers additional features like copying links. The personality of Tweetbot 3 really peeks through when you encounter animated elements though. Try tapping on a media link and you’ll get a full-screen image that can be moved around with a finger and tossed off the screen in any direction — enabled by Apple’s new dynamics engine. This isn’t a pre-programmed animation.

Frosty panes of translucency are used when appropriate, like the accounts screen and profile views. It all feels crisp and futuristic — and very much like a poster child for the design aesthetics that Apple wanted developers to take away from its new direction.

The incredibly useful and feature-rich nature of Tweetbot, thankfully, has remained in full force. This is truly the preferred client of Twitter power users in every way. There’s no comparison between the utility of Tweetbot and the Twitter apps that are currently offered for iOS. We’ve heard that there is a redesign still in the works at Twitter proper, and that’s good because as it is, there’s simply no reason for heavy tweeters to use those apps over Tweetbot.

One major, very subversive feature of Tweetbot 3 is the way that it prominently displays Twitter’s Verified check mark. There’s something about seeing the blue badge right in the timeline that makes verification a bigger deal than Twitter ever has. Those avatars jump out at you and the badge is even more of a status symbol now. I have this theory that Twitter is slowly working its way toward verifying all users, but until it does, the blue check is going to become insanely sought after among users of Tweetbot.

Hilariously, Tapbots Haddad and Jardine have their own custom badges.

The new Tweetbot uses the same token pool as the previous version, so users updating to the new app will not take up an additional slot. But that pool remains just as limited as it was when Twitter instituted its new caps on user tokens, so there is a limited amount of Tweetbot revenue still available to Tapbots. That’s why I find the plan to pay not only justifiable but relieving. I want to pay Tapbots for their hard work getting this thing in the shape that it is, which is fantastic. And paying for all of those months of work is the least that most of us can do for as much utility as Twitter power players get out of the app.

iOS 7 Users Complaining About Motion Sickness Due to Parallax and Zooming Effects

Some users on Apple’s Support Communities discussion forum are expressing discontent with the parallax and zooming animations in iOS 7, claiming that they have experienced bouts of motion sickness, reports The Verge.
The specific thread, which spans over eight pages, has users discussing symptoms that correlate to vertigo, intense nausea, and dizziness and which are occurring with prolonged use of iOS 7 involving actions such as returning to the home screen from an app and using the multitasking menu.
Instead, most are pointing to the zooming effects that are now ubiquitous across iOS when opening and closing apps or entering the multitasking menu. "I had severe vertigo the minute I started using my iPad with iOS 7," writes Apple forum user glassrabit. "Lost the rest of the day to it." Another user, nybe, writes, "I had to go home sick from work because of the intense nausea due to using my iPhone with iOS 7."
Apple has included a “Reduce Motion” option within iOS 7’s Accessibility menu, but that option only seems to turn off the parallax effect on the homescreen. Users in the thread have also called the company’s support line, but were informed by Apple that there is no way to completely turn off the effects.  After its release last week,  Apple announced earlier this week that iOS 7 is reportedly running on 200 million iOS devices, which makes it the fastest software upgrade in history.
